70S VETERAN JAILED FOR FATAL STABBING OF EX-PARTNER
A 74-year-old man named Thomas Whitehorn was sentenced to nine years in prison after being convicted of manslaughter in the death of his former partner, Rhonda Humphreys, at his residence in Hayle, Cornwall. The incident occurred on October 25, when Whitehorn stabbed Ms.
Humphreys 26 times.
Court proceedings revealed that although he initially attempted to support her, her alcohol dependency and mental health difficulties eventually overwhelmed him, leading to feelings of depression.
Whitehorn admitted to manslaughter due to diminished responsibility.
Evidence presented in court showed he collected military memorabilia, including knives, and that he stored a 'commando knife' in a drawer before attacking Ms.
Humphreys in her head, neck, and face in a moment of 'losing control.' It was established that he had resided in his flat since 1998, and that Ms.
Humphreys, who also had mental health challenges, had been in a relationship with him.
After the attack, he contacted emergency services, saying Ms.
Humphreys’ negative talking was 'driving him mad.' He also inscribed messages on walls and in a letter indicating he was 'no danger to anyone' but referred to her as 'evil.' He further attempted to end his life by overdosing on pills.
The sentencing judge acknowledged Whitehorn’s age, previous good character, and efforts to support her, but emphasized that these did not justify the violence he committed.
