A racist former police officer, PC Thomas Phillips, who was from the Met Police's Shirley South team in Croydon, did not resign from his position until long after pleading guilty to a campaign of abuse directed at his ex-girlfriend.
The Met Police confirmed that Phillips was sentenced to 71 days in prison after sending WhatsApp messages referring to a fellow officer as a 'n****r' and a 'mongrel.' Initially, Phillips denied his crimes and claimed that the messages had been fabricated by his ex-girlfriend, Samantha Ryan, and her new partner, Danny Gobin.
Despite indicating he would plead guilty back in June, Phillips only resigned on August 15—months after his lawyer claimed he had already admitted guilt.
The court heard that Phillips sent a series of offensive messages, with the judge pointing out that his false allegations had caused delays in the case.
The victim, Mr.
Gobin, stated in an emotional impact statement that Phillips 'wasted the taxpayers' money and also the court's time, knowing that he sent the messages.' The Metropolitan Police condemned his actions, stating that such behavior is unacceptable and does not reflect the views of the majority of officers.
A misconduct hearing is planned, and Phillips’s actions will be further investigated.
