TERENCE PHILLIPS FROM PEMBROKE AND WANTAGE JAILED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENSES
In a case that has shocked the local communities of Pembroke and Wantage, Terence Phillips, a 55-year-old man, was sentenced to eight years in prison for heinous crimes involving a young girl. The offences took place over an 18-month period, during which Phillips engaged in a disturbing pattern of grooming and sexual misconduct.Phillips, who resided on London Road in Pembroke at the time of the offences, targeted a young girl in Wantage, where he repeatedly expressed his romantic interest and attempted to manipulate her into sexual activity. During their interactions, he explicitly told her that he fancied her and even offered her money in exchange for sexual favours, a clear attempt to coerce and exploit her vulnerability.
The crimes were committed between May 2004 and November 2005, and Phillips was later brought to trial at Oxford Crown Court. A jury found him guilty of two counts of sexual assault, one count of attempted rape, and inciting a child under the age of 13 to engage in sexual activity. The severity of these charges underscores the gravity of his actions and the impact they have had on the victim.
During the sentencing hearing, Jennifer Edwards, representing Phillips, maintained that her client denied all allegations. She remarked, “I’ve no doubt the prison sentence will have significant effects on his health and wellbeing,” suggesting that Phillips’s legal team would appeal or seek leniency.
Judge Patrick Eccles delivered the verdict, condemning Phillips’s conduct as grooming, which he described as behavior that can only be characterized as manipulative and predatory. The judge stated, “You offered her money to pay for sexual favours. Having met her, you behaved in a way which can only be described as grooming.”
Addressing the impact of Phillips’s actions, Judge Eccles emphasized the lasting harm inflicted upon the young girl, noting, “All of this will have a lasting impact on that young girl.” The court’s decision reflects the seriousness with which such crimes are viewed, especially given the vulnerability of the victim and the manipulative nature of the offender’s conduct.
It was also noted that Phillips has since moved to Pembrokeshire, Wales, where he currently resides. His case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding children and the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to bring offenders to justice.
