DAGENHAM POLICE OFFICER SENTENCED FOR HARASSMENT AND MISCONDUCT

Married Sergeant Syed Ali, a police officer from Dagenham, East London, engaged in a serious misconduct by sending the woman nearly 500 unwanted messages over a ten-week period from May 2020.

The messages included texts and a picture of a topless Asian female, with Ali instigating contact after five years of no communication.

The woman initially did not recognize him, but once she discovered his identity as a Metropolitan Police Service officer, she asked him to stop messaging her.

Despite this, Ali continued to send sexually explicit messages, including approximately 450 texts in a short span in July 2020.

He pleaded guilty to harassment without violence, leading to a suspended prison sentence at Westminster Magistrates’ Court.

The judge emphasized the breach of trust and the damage to public confidence, stating Ali's actions undermined faith in police integrity, especially since his contact was based on his role as an officer.

The court sentenced him to six weeks in prison, suspended for 18 months, ordered him to complete 200 hours of community service, and imposed a three-year restraining order not to contact the woman.

Ali has resigned from the police after 19 years of service and is supported by his wife, currently seeking employment.
