SUZANNE DOLAN'S NEGLIGENCE IN GLASGOW TOLLCCROSS LEADS TO CHILD'S GRAVE INJURIES
On September 28, 2020, a distressing incident unfolded in the Tollcross area of Glasgow involving a woman named Suzanne Dolan, aged 41, which resulted in severe injuries to a young child in her care. The incident occurred when Dolan was looking after a toddler in her flat, and during this time, she was engaged in a conversation with a delivery driver. In a moment of oversight, the child was able to access an open first-floor window, which was not properly secured. The child tragically fell from the window onto the concrete surface of the garden below, sustaining critical injuries including a fractured skull, bleeding to the brain, and a broken leg. The fall was a devastating event that left the child's health permanently affected.Initially, Dolan attempted to downplay the severity of the incident by claiming that the child had fallen from a trampoline. However, as investigations progressed, she admitted to the court that her neglect played a significant role in the accident. She pleaded guilty to charges of wilful neglect, acknowledging her failure to ensure the child's safety. The court proceedings culminated on May 15, 2025, with a sentencing that reflected the seriousness of her actions. Dolan was ordered to complete 210 hours of unpaid work, undergo two years of supervision, and wear a tagging device for three months, which restricted her movements between 7pm and 7am.
During the sentencing, the sheriff emphasized the gravity of the incident but chose not to impose a custodial sentence. The sheriff recognized Dolan's remorse and the tragic consequences of her neglect, which included not only the initial injuries but also subsequent harm. Later that same day, the child experienced another fall, leading to further injuries. In response to the incident, Dolan took measures to improve her home safety, including the installation of baby gates. Unfortunately, negligence in properly locking one of these gates contributed to the child's subsequent fall and injuries.
The court heard about the profound impact this neglect has had on the child's health, including impairments to vision and difficulties with walking. The case highlights the devastating effects that lapses in supervision and safety precautions can have on vulnerable children, and it underscores the importance of responsible caregiving in ensuring the safety and well-being of young children in Glasgow.
