MAN WITH SCHIZOPHRENIA KILLS GRANDMOTHER IN MANOR PARK

A man with schizophrenia who killed his grandmother two days after being released from a psychiatric hospital has been detained indefinitely.

Subell Ali, aged 34, stabbed Somtera Bibi, 80, more than 20 times at a family home in Manor Park last April.

At the Old Bailey, Judge Philip Katz KC issued a hospital order with no time limit and ordered his detention at Three Bridges Medium Secure Unit.

The court ruled that Ali, who was deemed too ill to stand trial, was responsible for the act.

Ali was previously detained under the Mental Health Act in May 2020 after telling police that people in Brick Lane were instructing him to 'stab people.' He was admitted to a psychiatric hospital and released on 31 March 2022.

Just two days after his release, his sister Seema Ali called 999, reporting that he had schizophrenia, had stopped taking his medication, and was angry and potentially dangerous: 'He wants to run out of the house.

He might hurt somebody.

He's really angry as well.' The killing occurred while Ms Bibi was asleep in the living room when her daughter heard her scream and found Ali at a bus stop covered in her blood.

Ali later told police, 'Someone told me to do this.

Why would I do that to my own nan?' The court described the injuries inflicted on Ms Bibi, which included over 20 stab wounds to her face and body, with the most serious to her chest.

She also had knife injuries to her right hand and wrist, suggesting she was trying to defend herself.

The incident was described as a tragic and violent attack on an elderly woman.
