STUART WOODS FROM SANDHURST SENTENCED TO 11 YEARS FOR SEX OFFENCES AGAINST CHILDREN IN READING
In a significant case that has sent shockwaves through the local community, Stuart Woods, a 34-year-old resident of Wellington Road in Sandhurst, has been convicted and sentenced to prison for serious sexual offences involving minors. The trial, which concluded on August 12, 2021, at Reading Crown Court, resulted in a unanimous jury verdict finding Woods guilty on multiple counts.Specifically, Woods was convicted of two counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child and three counts of sexual communication with a child. These offences involved three different victims, all of whom were minors, highlighting the disturbing nature of his crimes. The court heard evidence that Woods exploited his position of influence as a national gymnastics coach to groom and manipulate his young victims.
The investigation into Woods' conduct was led by Detective Constable Sukhpreet Singh of the Child Abuse Investigation Unit. In a statement, Detective Singh emphasized the gravity of Woods' actions, saying, “Woods used his position of influence to groom his victims. This led to Woods sexually abusing a child and abusing two other children by sexual communication for his own sexual gratification.”
He further remarked on the betrayal of trust involved, noting, “Woods was supposed to be someone who was supportive and someone for children to rely on, however his conviction and sentencing shows he is a dangerous and predatory paedophile.” The officer expressed appreciation for the victims' bravery in coming forward, which was instrumental in bringing Woods to justice. “I would like to pay tribute and commend the victims for coming forward which has led to Woods being jailed and means he is no longer a threat to children,” he added.
As part of his sentence, Woods will serve half of his 11-year term in prison, with the remaining half on license. Additionally, he has been subjected to a 20-year sexual harm prevention order and a restraining order to protect potential future victims. He is also required to sign the sex offenders register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions to prevent further harm. This case underscores the importance of vigilance and the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to safeguard children from predators in the community.
