STUART LILLEY FROM EDINBURGH, GLASGOW, AND GRANGEMOUTH ESCAPES JAIL AFTER CHILD PORNOGRAPHY CHARGES

In August 2012, a disturbing case involving a former paediatric nurse from Scotland drew significant public attention and concern. Stuart Lilley, aged 28, who previously worked at the renowned Sick Kids Hospital in Edinburgh, was found to possess an alarming collection of child pornography. The hospital’s management issued a statement to reassure parents and the community after Lilley’s arrest and subsequent revelations.

It was revealed that Lilley had accumulated over 6,000 indecent images of children, which were stored across his home computer and an external hard drive. The investigation was triggered when Lilley’s then-girlfriend discovered a disturbing photograph of a toddler on his computer at their shared flat in Grangemouth. Concerned by the nature of the image, she promptly contacted the police. Authorities responded swiftly, arresting Lilley at the hospital last August. During the subsequent search of his residence, law enforcement officials seized his computer and found that approximately 300 of the images fell into the most serious category used to classify such material.

Following his arrest, Lilley was charged with possessing indecent photographs of children. He was suspended from his position at NHS Lothian and later resigned from his role. Lilley, who resided on Barrland Street in Glasgow, admitted to possessing the images between August 8, 2010, and August 16, 2011, at his former home in Grangemouth. His court appearance took place at Falkirk Sheriff Court, where he faced the charges.

During the hearing, Sheriff John Mundy sentenced Lilley to 200 hours of unpaid community service. Additionally, Lilley was prohibited from being unsupervised with children and from using a computer without supervision. The court also placed him on probation and registered him on the sex offenders register for a period of three years. The judge acknowledged the severity of the case but noted mitigating factors presented by Lilley’s defense.

Lorraine Glancy QC, representing Lilley, admitted that the case could have resulted in a custodial sentence. However, she argued that the circumstances warranted a more lenient approach, citing that only 111 of the images were real photographs, with more than half of the images having been deleted prior to the investigation. She also pointed out that over 65,000 images were cartoon or animated representations, which, in her view, did not involve actual harm to children. She emphasized that, in the majority of the images, no children were harmed during their creation.

Despite the court’s leniency, Sheriff Mundy expressed that he was on the verge of sending Lilley to prison but ultimately decided against it, citing the factors presented during the hearing. After the proceedings concluded, Lilley quickly changed out of his formal attire into a tracksuit and glasses to avoid a hostile crowd waiting outside the courtroom. As he exited, he was met with chants of “beast” from a group of approximately ten members of the public, some of whom had brought young children with them.

Authorities from NHS Lothian and the police reassured the public that there was no evidence to suggest any of Lilley’s patients or children in his care had been involved or harmed. The Nursing and Midwifery Council suspended Lilley from practicing for 18 months following the allegations, and it is anticipated that he will be struck off the register later in the year.

Melanie Hornett, the director of nursing at NHS Lothian, stated, “We can confirm that Mr Lilley is no longer our employee having previously worked at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children for a short period in 2011. We would like to reassure the public that NHS Lothian takes child protection extremely seriously and has cooperated fully with police on this matter.”

Detective Chief Inspector Barry Blair of Central Scotland Police’s Public Protection Unit commented on the investigation, saying, “Stuart Lilley was investigated for possessing a significant amount of indecent child images. We worked closely with our partners in NHS Lothian during this investigation to ensure no stone was left unturned regarding his lifestyle and potential access to children. Following the inquiry, there was no evidence to suggest that he had carried out any of the abuse depicted in the images.”
