SOUTHAMPTON MAN STEVEN WATERS SENTENCED TO LIFE FOR PARTNER'S MURDER
A man from Southampton named Steven Waters was sentenced to life imprisonment after being found guilty of murdering his partner, Anita Bawtree.The incident took place at their flat on Paynes Road in the Freemantle district during the early morning hours of April 19 the previous year.
Waters, aged 55, inflicted 15 stab wounds on Ms.
Bawtree during the attack.
The presiding judge at Winchester Crown Court, Keith Cutler, mandated that Waters serve at least 18 years before he could be considered for parole.
Court proceedings revealed that Waters had subjected Ms.
Bawtree, who was vulnerable and in recovery from mental illness, to a two-hour period of mental and physical abuse prior to the fatal stabbing.
Waters was a cannabis user and suffered from a mental disorder induced by drug use.
He denied intentionally murdering his partner but admitted to manslaughter on the basis of diminished responsibility; nevertheless, the jury found him guilty of murder.
During the sentencing, Waters showed no signs of emotion as he was taken from the courtroom.
A mitigation statement from Anthony Davies QC highlighted Waters' remorse.
Waters explained that the drug he had taken caused him to believe Ms.
Bawtree was a Nazi and that he thought he was part of a conspiracy involving the government, media, and police.
He had previously been detained under the Mental Health Act and struggled with alcohol and substance abuse.
The case involved complex issues related to Waters' mental health and diminished responsibility, but the jury concluded he was fit enough to be convicted of murder.
Witnesses reported hearing Waters shouting at Ms.
Bawtree, followed by a loud impact, and police ended a three-hour standoff at the scene.
Authorities expressed appreciation for expert support due to the mental health factors involved.
The incident has been described as a violent and frightening attack on Ms.
Bawtree, who was someone she loved and trusted, culminating in her death at Waters’ hands.
