A PAEDOPHILE TRIED TO GROOM A 12-YEAR-OLD BOY - BUT IT WAS ACTUALLY AN UNDERCOVER POLICE OFFICER
A distressing case has unfolded involving Steven Mellor, a man from Morfa View, Bodelwyddan, Rhyl, who attempted to initiate inappropriate and illegal communications with a boy he believed was just 12 years old.In reality, the individual Mellor was engaging with was an undercover police officer working to expose such predatory behaviour.
Mellor, aged 67, faced a series of serious charges during his appearance at Mold Crown Court.
The charges included attempting to engage in sexual communication with a minor, specifically trying to incite a boy under the age of 13 to partake in non-penetrative sexual activity.
Additional allegations against him comprised making indecent photographs of a child, possessing a prohibited image of a young person, possessing extreme pornographic images, and distributing an indecent photograph of a child.
The incident that led to Mellor’s arrest began when he interacted with an undercover police officer who was posing as a 12-year-old boy named Charlie.
These conversations, which occurred between July and August of the previous year, revealed Mellor’s disturbing intentions as he encouraged 'Charlie' to perform a sexual act.
The police operation aimed to catch individuals seeking to exploit children online, and Mellor’s explicit dialogue confirmed his harmful intentions.
Following his apprehension, authorities discovered that Mellor had accumulated a collection of illegal images depicting children aged approximately nine to ten years old.
This evidence added to the severity of his offences, illustrating a disturbing pattern of illegal activity.
Mellor does not have any prior convictions, a fact that his defense lawyer, Simon Killeen, emphasized.
Killeen described Mellor as a “low risk” offender and highlighted that he is the primary caregiver for his elderly, housebound mother.
Throughout the court proceedings, Killeen also pointed out that Mellor has led a relatively isolated life, having moved back into his parents’ house in 2002 to look after his aging parents.
He requested the judge consider a suspended sentence, citing Mellor’s caring responsibilities and personal circumstances.
However, Judge Timothy Petts was unequivocal in his condemnation of Mellor’s actions.
He described Mellor’s behavior as “disgusting” and sentenced him to 34 months in prison.
The judge also imposed a sexual harm prevention order that will last for fifteen years, and Mellor will be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
In his remarks, Judge Petts highlighted the gravity of Mellor’s attempts to groom a minor online.
He noted that Mellor’s communications with ‘Charlie’ were calculated and manipulative, with Mellor effectively assuming the role of an authority figure during their interactions.
The judge pointed out the significant disparity in age and emphasized the heinous nature of the images Mellor possessed some depicting the rape of a young child estimated to be around four years old.
The severity of the case was compounded by the length of time Mellor was collecting illegal images and the variety of severity levels among them.
The court acknowledged that, although Mellor was 67 with no criminal record, his actions were extremely serious.
The existence of real children in the images, as opposed to the simulated or staged images often found in such cases, underlined the gravity of the offenses.
The court’s verdict sent a clear message about the abhorrent nature of child exploitation and the importance of strict legal consequences for such crimes.
