SUPPORT WORKER WHO DEFRAUDED VULNERABLE PEOPLE OUT OF THOUSANDS JAILED
A former support worker who exploited vulnerable individuals to steal money has been sentenced to prison.Ian Jones, aged 61 and residing on Bedford Street in Rhyl, defrauded seven people out of nearly £46,000 over a period of seven years.
He pleaded guilty to seven counts of fraud through false representation during a hearing at Mold Magistrates Court last month and received a two-year prison sentence at Mold Crown Court on Thursday, 12 February.
At the time of the offenses, Jones was employed as a Learning Disability Support Worker and used his position to access his victims' personal information, which he then used to apply for credit in their names.
Several of his victims had significant disabilities, including limited speech capabilities.
Police became involved at the end of 2020 after it was found that one victim had received a letter from a credit management company claiming he owed nearly £370.
The account was linked to Jones' home address.
A search warrant executed at Jones' residence uncovered various financial documents, credit cards in other names, and over £9,000 in cash.
The investigation revealed that Jones was using his victims' identities to secure credit cards and finance high-value items such as luxury jewelry, bedroom furniture, a new kitchen and appliances, and the installation of a new boiler in his own house.
