PONTEFRACT MAN GETS SUSPENDED SENTENCE FOR BRUTAL ATTACK ON GIRLFRIEND AFTER C-SECTION
Steven Garth, aged 34, was convicted of assaulting his partner just days after she had undergone an emergency C-section.Described by the court as a victim-blaming individual, Garth continues to deny having committed the attack.
The court revealed that on 9 January, Garth assaulted the woman after she returned home from visiting her daughter in hospital and questioned his reasons for requesting money.
The woman had been operated on earlier in January for an emergency C-section and was dealing with an infection at the time.
Prosecutor Samuel Sharp stated that Garth asked her for money to buy tobacco, and when she refused—knowing he possessed the funds and that they might be used for alcohol and drugs—she advised him to stop drinking and taking drugs.
The court detailed the attack, stating Garth ‘erupted in anger’ and hit the woman twice, causing her to fall with her five-year-old daughter nearby.
He then stomped three times on her surgical scar.
Witnesses reported that the woman’s bleeding from the wound was ‘very uncommon and rare after surgery.’ The victim’s children hid while others contacted the police.
Garth escaped the scene but was ultimately found guilty of assault causing actual bodily harm at Leeds Magistrates' Court.
He was supported during sentencing by family members and received a two-year suspended imprisonment term, along with orders for rehabilitation and relationship therapy.
Additionally, a ten-year restraining order was imposed.
The judge underscored the severity of the assault, criticizing Garth’s denial and victim-blaming stance in his pre-sentence report, and highlighting that he did not stay behind to help or apologize to his partner, prioritizing his own interests instead.
