EX-UKIP COUNCILLOR JAILED FOR LIFE OVER WIFE'S MURDER
Stephen Searle, aged 64 and a former councillor for UKIP, received a life sentence for the murder of his wife, Anne Searle, at their residence in Stowmarket, Suffolk.
The fatal event took place on December 30, when Searle strangled Anne after she uncovered his extramarital affair.
An Ipswich Crown Court jury reached a guilty verdict after just three and a half hours of deliberation.
The judge imposed a minimum term of 14 years, emphasizing that his actions brought about profound pain and suffering to his family.
Throughout the trial, Searle asserted he acted in self-defense when his wife allegedly attacked him with a knife, but the court found enough evidence that he had restrained her with a chokehold—likely influenced by his military background—which resulted in her suffocation from neck compression.
After the sentencing, Searle was recorded telling police in a 999 call, “I've just killed my wife.” The case garnered extensive media coverage, shedding light on domestic violence issues and their devastating outcomes.
