MAN JAILED FOR ATTEMPTING TO MURDER WIFE
Stephen Crush, aged 59, was taken into custody at his residence in Lowestoft, Suffolk during September following a critical incident involving his wife, Sarah. She was hospitalised in a serious condition and continues to receive medical care.
At Ipswich Crown Court, Crush received a custodial sentence of 13 and a half years after confessing to attempted murder.
The incident occurred when Crush contacted authorities at 23:35 BST on September 9, claiming he had assaulted his wife at their Victoria Road home and believed she might have died.
Emergency responders discovered Mrs Crush in the kitchen with a severe head wound.
She was initially taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge and later transferred to another medical facility where her treatment persists.
During his police interview, Crush attributed his actions to mental health issues and suspicion that his wife had been poisoning his food.
However, these explanations were dismissed in court due to lack of supporting evidence.
The court was informed that Crush, who had an earlier conviction for assaulting his wife in 2007, had remained in his bedroom for several hours after the attack before calling emergency services.
Detective Chief Inspector Caroline Millar described the assault as a "horrendous act of violence," emphasizing that Mrs Crush might never recover from her injuries.
She detailed that Crush struck Sarah once with a heavy construction tool and then at least twice more, leaving her helpless and vulnerable in her condition.
