ANNAN MAN STEPHEN PRENTICE CAUGHT IN PENRITH ONLINE SEXUAL CHAT WITH UNDERCOVER OFFICER
In a case that highlights the growing concern over online grooming and sexual predation, Stephen Prentice, a 51-year-old man originally from Penrith and now residing on Nicholson Street in Annan, was caught engaging in inappropriate online communication with an individual he believed to be a 13-year-old girl.The incident took place in early May of the previous year, during which Prentice initiated a conversation that quickly turned sexualized.
He asked the supposed young girl if she was 'naughty' and went further by sending an explicit photograph, actions that have now led to serious legal consequences.
Prosecutor Wayne Jackson, presenting the case at Carlisle Crown Court, explained that Prentice's online interactions were with an undercover law enforcement officer.
The officer had posed as a minor, and during the exchange, Prentice explicitly requested 'naughty pics' from what he thought was a young girl.
The court was informed that Prentice's behavior was part of an increasing pattern among middle-aged men seeking sexual gratification through the internet, often targeting young females or children.
Following the online incident, police officers visited Prentice’s former residence in Penrith to carry out a search.
They seized an iPhone, which was subjected to forensic analysis.
Initially, Prentice denied any wrongdoing, claiming that his account must have been hacked.
However, he later admitted to two charges: attempting to cause a child to view an image of sexual activity and attempting to engage in sexual communication with a minor.
Importantly, no indecent images of children were found on his device.
Judge Nicholas Barker delivered the sentence, which included a two-year community order.
This order requires Prentice to undergo rehabilitation programs and complete 200 hours of unpaid work.
Additionally, he is mandated to sign the sex offenders’ register for a period of five years.
The judge addressed the court, stating, “You are a 51-year-old man and, can I say, one of an increasing number of middle-aged, lonely and somewhat isolated men who appear before the courts having decided that they will gain sexual gratification from going on the internet and seeking to engage with young, typically female people, children.
It is a perversion, it is deviant and you know it to be so.”
