STEPHEN EVANS OF LLANELLI SENTENCED FOR 1970S CAERPHILLY OFFENCES

In June 2021, Stephen Evans, aged 58 and resident of Bryn Rhos, Llanelli, was sentenced to over a decade in prison for a series of historic child abuse offences committed in Caerphilly during the 1970s and 1980s.

A jury found him guilty of five counts of indecent assault and five counts of indecency with a child.

At Cardiff Crown Court, Judge Michael Fitton QC condemned Evans, stating, “You corrupted and depraved your victim.

You treated her as your sex toy.

You knew the difference between right and wrong.” The judge emphasized Evans’ denial of the crimes and his persistent courtroom defence, remarking, “You fought tooth and nail to avoid the truth.

You bent her to your will.

You wriggled and lied throughout the trial.

You thought you were above the law.” Prosecutor Clare Wilks told the court that the victim had suffered depression following her traumatic experience.

Despite his past guilt, Nicola Powell, representing Evans in mitigation, highlighted that he was a man of previous good character with no prior convictions.

Evans was sentenced to a total of 11 years in prison and was also mandated to register as a sex offender for life.
