STEPHEN ALTY FROM TORQUAY JAILED FOR OVER A THOUSAND CHILD INDECENT IMAGES

In a case that has shocked the community of Torquay, 66-year-old Stephen Alty has been sentenced to eight months in prison after being found guilty of possessing a vast collection of indecent images of children. The court heard that Alty, a resident of St Lukes Road North in Torquay, had accumulated more than a thousand such images, which ranged from less severe categories to the most graphic and extreme forms of child exploitation.

Alty had previously pleaded guilty to seven charges related to the creation of these images, which included categories one through five, indicating a progression from less to more severe material. Additionally, he admitted to two charges of possessing indecent images and one charge of possessing an extreme pornographic image. The severity of the case prompted the judge, Graham Cottle, to deliver a stern warning about the damage caused by such material, stating, “Incalculable damage is done to very young children who are required to take part in making these images for the entertainment of people like yourself.”

The police investigation into Alty’s activities began in November 2008, when authorities raided his home in Torquay and seized his computers. While Alty was initially released on bail, pending the examination of his electronic devices, he did not cease his activities. During this period, he purchased another computer and continued to search the internet for child pornography, demonstrating a disturbing persistence in his offending behavior.

Judge Cottle expressed skepticism about Alty’s remorse, remarking, “Had you ceased this activity following your first arrest, I might have been more persuaded to accept the apparent expressions of remorse and determination to avoid offending in this way again. As it is, I view with scepticism whether you genuinely wish to change your ways.”

Prosecutor Joss Tysehurst revealed that police officers discovered Alty’s collection in a room at the rear of his garage, where he kept a computer, a laptop, and videos. Records from his computer showed searches for websites related to Lolita and pre-teen content, indicating a disturbing interest in young children.

During police interviews, Alty claimed that he had come across the images accidentally and that curiosity had led him to view such material. However, the court was not convinced by his explanations. In his defense, solicitor Martin Salloway highlighted Alty’s previous good character and his health issues, suggesting that the greatest punishment was the shame and disgrace he had brought upon himself and his family.

As part of his sentence, Alty was ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities and potential restrictions on his future conduct. The case underscores the ongoing concern within the community of Torquay regarding the safety and protection of children from exploitation and abuse.
