2008: TRAGIC BABY JACK: COUPLE JAILED FOR CHILD CRUELTY

A couple has received a six-year prison sentence after being convicted of child cruelty related to the death of their six-month-old son in Tameside.

The infant, named Jack, succumbed to pneumonia in November 2006 at Tameside General Hospital.

Despite being aware of his compromised immune system and significant underweight condition, his parents failed to seek medical help until it was too late, even though signs of severe illness were evident.

Stacey Louise Taylor, 20, and Mark John Harrison, 27, both of Chapel Court, Hyde, were convicted of child cruelty following a trial that lasted three weeks at Sheffield Crown Court.

Additionally, Taylor admitted to possessing cannabis during a police drugs search in May 2007 and was sentenced to three years for child cruelty plus one day for the drug offence, to run consecutively.

Harrison confessed to possessing cocaine and cannabis with intent to supply, receiving three years for child cruelty and a 12-month term for the drugs, also to be served consecutively.

At the time of Jack’s death, examinations revealed multiple fractures of different ages on his arms, legs, and ribs, with injuries deemed to be non-accidental.

The oldest fracture was estimated to be about 12 weeks old, while the others ranged from one to two weeks.

Small bruises on his face and head, caused within 48 hours of his death, were also found, with a pathologist suggesting they were likely inflicted through poking or prodding.

Tameside Detective Constable Kath McKenzie from the public protection unit expressed her outrage, stating, 'It’s incomprehensible how someone can intentionally harm a vulnerable baby.

What’s even more upsetting is that Jack’s parents prioritized themselves over seeking medical help for their injured and ill child.

Despite clear signs of his serious condition, they chose not to take him to the hospital or see a doctor, possibly fearing his injuries would be uncovered.' She added, 'Throughout the investigation, they failed to provide a plausible explanation for his injuries, claiming they were accidental or that they did not recognize them.

The court has dismissed these claims.

Hopefully, one day, Jack’s parents will accept responsibility for their son’s tragic and preventable death.'
