SONNY SMAILES FROM HARTLEPOOL SENTENCED FOR DOMESTIC ABUSE AND PROPERTY DAMAGE IN TEESSIDE
In a case that has drawn significant attention, Sonny Smailes, a man from Hartlepool, has been convicted of a series of serious offences related to domestic abuse and property destruction.The incidents took place over an extended period, during which Smailes subjected his pregnant partner to relentless violence and controlling behavior, culminating in a court hearing at Teesside Magistrates’ Court on 16 January 2025.
According to court records, Smailes was found guilty of three counts of criminal damage to property and one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
The court heard harrowing details of the abuse, which reportedly persisted for more than a year.
During this time, the victim, who was pregnant at the time, endured multiple assaults, including a particularly violent incident at five months of pregnancy that resulted in her being hospitalized.
This incident was severe enough to require medical intervention, highlighting the dangerous nature of Smailes' actions.
Beyond physical violence, Smailes engaged in a pattern of controlling and degrading behavior.
He was accused of breaking into his partner’s home, damaging her personal belongings, and verbally abusing her.
One particularly disturbing event took place on a hospital maternity ward, where Smailes displayed aggressive conduct around other new mothers and their babies.
This incident was captured on CCTV footage and subsequently reported to the authorities, adding to the evidence against him.
The impact of this prolonged abuse has left lasting scars on the victim.
She testified in court that she continues to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder and has had to take additional security measures at her home to ensure her safety.
She described ongoing feelings of anxiety and fear, not only for herself but also for her child’s safety.
During the sentencing, it was revealed that Smailes was battling substance misuse issues during the relationship, which may have contributed to his violent behavior.
The court sentenced him to eight months in prison, but this sentence was suspended for 18 months.
Additionally, Smailes was ordered to complete 150 hours of unpaid community work and attend 35 days of rehabilitation programs aimed at addressing his behavioral issues.
To further protect the victim and her child, a five-year restraining order was issued, prohibiting Smailes from making contact or approaching them.
He was also ordered to pay £600 in compensation to the victim and a £154 victim surcharge.
