OFFENDER JAILED FOR ATTEMPTED MURDER AFTER BRUTAL ATTACK ON EX-PARTNER IN HUCKNALL
At age 50, Simon Scrimshaw hid in the bushes for about 40 minutes with the intention of attacking his former partner, Rosie Niessen, 28, as she was leaving her home for her job.The attack was captured on her doorbell camera, showing a violent assault.
Scrimshaw attacked her from behind with a Stanley knife, slashing her throat and striking her face, neck, and hands while she fought back desperately.
Rosie, who is employed as a prison officer and has one child, described how her life seemed to flash before her eyes during the attack—saying, "Life flashed before my eyes.
It could have been different.
Imagine if I had died or didn't defend myself as I did.
I was instinctively protecting my neck." A neighbor saw the assault in progress and called emergency services.
Police swiftly responded and arrested Scrimshaw.
The victim sustained critical injuries, including a slash across her neck that was visible on CCTV footage.
Her father, Roberto Niessen, heard her screams and intervened, receiving a deep gash in his leg.
Scrimshaw denied the charges but was convicted after a two-week trial of attempted murder and causing grievous bodily harm.
He was sentenced in January 2024 to 28 years in prison, with an additional four years due to the court's assessment of him as dangerous.
Rosie expressed her anguish, stating, "He's a monster.
CCTV evidence left no doubt.
You can't deny what happened." The court also imposed a lifetime restraining order against Scrimshaw.
The attack has greatly affected Rosie physically and psychologically, preventing her from returning to work and motivating her to help other victims of domestic violence.
Reflecting on the incident, she said, "That shocked me.
I gasped," underscoring her shock at the sentence and her traumatic experience.
