A man identified as Simon Benjamin Morgan has been handed a substantial prison sentence of 14 years after being convicted of serious sexual assault and violent conduct against a woman. The sentencing took place at Swansea Crown Court, where detailed accounts of Morgan’s actions were presented to the court. Morgan, aged 40 and residing on Windsor Road in Neath, was found guilty of dragging his victim to the ground, physically assaulting her, and issuing threats to kill her during the attack. The court was told that Morgan was armed with a bottle of rum at the time, which he brandished as a weapon to intimidate his victim. Following the assault, Morgan refused to leave her residence for several hours, prolonging her ordeal and adding to the trauma she endured.During the proceedings, the victim delivered a heartfelt impact statement, describing how the attack had severely affected her mental health and well-being. Her words underscored the lasting emotional scars inflicted by Morgan’s violence. In addition to this case, Morgan was linked to another brutal assault in Neath, where he severely injured a man’s face, necessitating reconstructive surgery. This incident further demonstrated Morgan’s pattern of violent behavior. Moreover, he has a history of previous offenses, including an assault on a woman at Llangennith beach in Gower, which was witnessed by beachgoers. Despite the evidence and convictions, Morgan maintained his innocence throughout the trial, denying all allegations against him.
In his defense, Morgan’s legal representative highlighted that he has recently embraced Buddhism while serving time in prison. His practice of transcendental meditation was mentioned as a sign of his attempt at personal reform, emphasizing that his faith respects all forms of life. Morgan’s criminal record includes convictions for assault, grievous bodily harm, and coercive behavior, painting a picture of a long-standing pattern of violence and aggression.
Detective Inspector Sharon Gill-Lewis commented on the case, stating that Morgan waged a campaign of terror and violence, which caused significant distress to his victims. She expressed hope that Morgan’s imprisonment would facilitate the victim’s recovery and provide some measure of justice. The court sentenced Morgan to serve two-thirds of his 14-year term in prison, with the remaining period to be served on license in the community, reflecting the severity of his crimes and the need for ongoing supervision.
