WOMAN SENTENCED TO PRISON FOR ABANDONING DEAD SPRING SPANIEL IN NEATH
A woman named Jessica Catherine Louise Edwards from Fairyland, Neath, has been convicted of causing unnecessary suffering to her springer spaniel, Areo, by failing to provide adequate food and water. The dog was found dead in her property on 5 December last year, in an extremely emaciated condition, with all bones visible.
A vet described Areo's condition as 'one of the worst body conditions' they had ever seen.
The police and RSPCA entered the property after being granted permission, and were met with a foul smell.
They discovered Areo's body, which was almost devoid of muscle mass and infested with maggots.
The court heard that in order to reach such a state, the dog would have suffered from severe hunger for approximately three months, surviving on water only.
Edwards appeared at Swansea Magistrates Court on 1 July, was found guilty of two offences under the Animal Welfare Act, and was sentenced on 12 August to 26 weeks in prison, with the sentences for each charge running concurrently.
She was disqualified from keeping animals for life and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £154.
The court acknowledged her acceptance of the severity of the case, with mitigation noting she admitted it was an appalling situation and recognized she should have known better.
A witness statement from DCI Gemma Cooper of the RSPCA detailed the conditions under which the animals were found, including a large number of flies and maggots in and around Areo's body, and the fact that the body was seized to continue the investigation.
The case drew emotional reactions, with comments condemning her actions, describing her as a 'scum bag human being' and expressing outrage at her neglect.
The case highlights the ongoing issue of animal neglect and cruelty, with the authorities emphasizing that abandoning animals is never acceptable and expressing their heartbreak over Areo's suffering.
