SIMON BARLOW AND SHOCKING CRIMES IN FLINTSHIRE
A young woman in Flintshire faced a traumatic ordeal when she was sexually assaulted by an older man, which subsequently led her to attempt taking her own life. The perpetrator, Simon Barlow, aged 39, was also found to have violated a court-issued restraining order against another woman by sending her threatening messages.
The incident was brought before Mold Crown Court, where Judge His Honour Rhys Rowlands sentenced Barlow to a total of 24 months in prison.
Prosecutor Alexandra Carrier detailed that Barlow, a resident of Connah's Quay, had engaged in a sexual assault against a teenage girl who was over the age of 16.
The assault involved inappropriate touching that was sexual in nature and occurred over her clothing.
The teenage victim provided a heartfelt victim statement, revealing that the assault has profoundly affected her, describing it as an event that has "opened her eyes to the real world" and left her feeling extremely low.
She disclosed that she has attempted to end her life as a result of the incident, compounded by other personal concerns.
Her emotional distress has been severe, and she now struggles with the aftermath of the assault.
In addition to the victim's account, a woman who was also involved in the case submitted a statement describing her ongoing mental health struggles.
She reported experiencing panic attacks and flashbacks, and stated that she is constantly looking over her shoulder, indicating a persistent sense of fear and vulnerability.
Defence lawyer Dafydd Roberts acknowledged that Barlow has had issues with alcohol and drugs, which he argued contributed to his behaviour.
The court was informed that on the day of the sexual assault, Barlow had consumed vodka, Bailey's Irish Cream, and cocaine.
His legal representative emphasized that Barlow, while on remand, has been reflecting more clearly on his actions and expressed outrage at his own conduct.
The court sentenced Barlow to 14 months for the sexual assault on the teenage girl.
Additionally, he received a consecutive ten-month sentence for breaching the restraining order against another woman.
It is important to note that there was no separate penalty imposed for the threatening text message he sent.
Furthermore, the judge imposed a five-year restraining order that prohibits Barlow from making any contact with either of the victims.
He also reminded Barlow of his obligation to adhere to sex offender notification requirements for the next ten years, underscoring the seriousness of his offences and the court's commitment to public safety.
