SHOLDHEM ‘SHOLDY’ MOORE CONVICTED IN BARNSEY FOR CRUELTY TO GERMAN SHEPHERD PUPPY BELLE
Sholdhem ‘Sholdy’ Moore, born in 1994 and residing at 121 Harold Avenue in Barnsley, faced justice in 2025 after being found guilty of neglecting a young German Shepherd puppy named Belle. The case highlighted serious concerns about animal welfare and the responsibilities of pet owners within the Barnsley community.Moore’s neglect came to light after Belle was brought to the PDSA veterinary clinic in March 2024, suffering from a fractured back right leg and other injuries. Moore claimed that her injuries resulted from a road accident, but the severity of her condition raised suspicions. At the time, Belle also had two wounds that were bandaged, yet no further veterinary care was sought for her injuries. Despite the initial treatment, Moore failed to attend subsequent veterinary appointments, which prompted intervention from the RSPCA.
In April 2024, Inspector Kristy Ludlam visited Moore’s residence in Barnsley to investigate the situation. During her visit, Inspector Ludlam observed that Moore appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. She reported that Moore was swearing at her and refused to sign Belle into the care of the charity. The inspector described Moore’s condition as extremely concerning, noting that his eyes were bloodshot, his speech was slurred, and his movements were erratic, indicating intoxication. When asked to sign over custody of Belle, Moore bluntly refused, stating, “I’m not signing nothing,” before pacing around the kitchen in a manner that suggested further agitation. Despite the refusal, Inspector Ludlam warned Moore that further investigations would follow to ensure the welfare of the animal.
Moore was contacted again on May 1, 2025, and was cautioned about the possibility of facing charges under the Animal Welfare Act. He agreed to participate in an interview but failed to attend the scheduled meetings, as well as subsequent follow-ups. This lack of cooperation further underscored the neglectful attitude towards Belle’s well-being.
A veterinary report later confirmed that Belle had sustained a severe injury that caused her ongoing pain and suffering. The report also revealed that Moore had failed to administer pain relief medication, which could have alleviated her discomfort. Additionally, the bandage applied to her leg had caused pressure sores and infections, exacerbating her condition. The veterinarian concluded that Belle’s suffering was a direct result of Moore’s neglect, which included neglecting her veterinary needs, diet, and pain management.
During the trial, Moore admitted to causing Belle unnecessary suffering through neglect. Both charges were prosecuted under the Animal Welfare Act 2006, emphasizing the seriousness of his actions. Inspector Ludlam emphasized that financial or personal difficulties do not justify neglect, stating, “The animal’s owner has a responsibility to ensure proper treatment is provided, and there are support systems available for pet owners who face difficulties.”
She also highlighted that Belle, as a young puppy, simply wanted to play and run freely, but her life was marred by Moore’s neglect. Fortunately, Belle received the necessary veterinary treatment, made a full recovery, and was placed in a caring and loving home where she could enjoy her life without fear of harm.
In sentencing, Moore received an eight-week suspended prison sentence for the initial offence and a four-week suspended sentence for the second, both to run concurrently. He was also ordered to undertake eight days of rehabilitation. Additionally, Moore was required to pay costs amounting to £200 and a victim surcharge of £154. As part of the penalties, he was banned from keeping animals for life, a measure intended to prevent any future neglect or cruelty towards animals in his care.
