ARMY VETERAN SENTENCED FOR WIFE'S 'SAVAGE ATTACK' IN FELIXSTOWE
Shaun Ryan, a 64-year-old former soldier with a history of neurological damage and mental health concerns, was sentenced for the murder of his wife, Jean.
The court heard that on April 13, 2016, he launched a violent assault on her in their home on Gosford Way, Felixstowe, which involved stabbing her at least twelve times.
The attack was reportedly initiated following a disagreement over a broken necklace, an incident that prompted Mrs.
Ryan to call the police while she was emotionally distressed.
Upon police arrival, Ryan told officers he had disarmed his wife after she charged at him with a knife, though he couldn't recall details beyond that.
The assault included blunt force trauma to her head, bruising on her face and body, and numerous stab wounds.
Ryan's medical history includes brain trauma, epilepsy, and alcohol problems; he was not on medication for his epilepsy at the time of the killing.
The court sentenced him to 12 years in jail, coupled with an indefinite hospital order and an extended five-year supervision period, meaning he could be hospitalized or re-imprisoned if his mental state deteriorates to the point where he cannot be safely released.
