MAN IS LEFT WAITING FOR RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY AFTER BROTHER BITES OFF HIS NOSE

A man whose brother bit off the end of his nose has been left waiting for reconstructive surgery because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The injury was caused by 27-year-old Shane Groves in The Progressive Club in Alexandra Terrace, Sutton-in-Ashfield, on April 5 last year.

He was jailed for 25 months when he was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court on November 5 after pleading guilty to wounding.

Groves, who was living in Hazel Street, Sutton-in-Ashfield, was verbally aggressive towards his brother's friend.

His brother tried to intervene to calm that down and he did, the court heard.

"He was foolish enough to then start giving you some lip and that resulted in you walking over to him and what looks from the CCTV to have been an attempt to headbutt him," said Recorder Paul Mann QC.

"He prevented that; getting your head into an armlock, and the two of you then remained struggling in that position for quite some little time, drawing in other people trying to pull you off and, having pulled you off, it became clear that your brother had lost the end of his nose you had gripped between your teeth".

He said it had "appalling consequences for your brother".

He initially had his nose sewn back on but it did not take.

"He is still waiting after all this time for a series of operations to undergo reconstructive surgery, skin grafts and, unfortunately owing to the current situation, he is still in the position of having no end of his nose and it has had a profound effect on his personality.

"He used to be a confident man, he now is not.

He is reluctant to go out and socialise.

For all the obvious reasons, it destroys him every time he sees his face in the mirror.

"It has destroyed his family and, probably, what has destroyed him more than anything, is the total failure on your part for a long time for you to accept responsibility for what you did.

You went 'no comment' in interview and you have never said a word to him since by way of apology."
