JAIL FOR SEX OFFENDER WHO TRAVELLED TO CANADA TO MEET HIS VICTIM
A man accused of child sex offenses was caught after traveling abroad to meet a girl he had groomed online.Gary Burrows, aged 34, engaged in sexually explicit conversations with the young girl via social media platforms.
Knowing she was only 15 at the time, he persuaded her to send him explicit photos, which he then shared in return.
He planned to meet her in person and traveled to Canada after she turned 16.
In September 2023, Ontario Provincial Police learned about Burrows’ sexual relationship with the girl.
Since the age of consent in Canada is 16, they did not take further action.
However, the matter was reported to police in Nottinghamshire, UK, to investigate possible offenses committed while the girl was still 15.
Burrows’ mobile device was analyzed, leading to his arrest in October 2023.
Previously from Lime Street in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Burrows admitted to charges including producing indecent images of a child, causing a 13- to 15-year-old girl to view sexual images, and having sexual conversations with a minor.
He also pleaded guilty to two counts of encouraging a girl aged 13 to 15 to engage in sexual acts.
On 20 February, at Nottingham Crown Court, Burrows was sentenced to three years in prison.
He was also placed on the sex offenders register and was subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order to limit his future actions after his release.
