SHANE BURT CONNAH’S QUAY BADGER CRIME: POLICE UNCOVER HORRIFIC FOOTAGE AND HAND DOWN SENTENCE

Shane Paul Burt, born around 1989 and residing at 10 Deans Avenue in Connah’s Quay, Deeside CH5 4QF, became the subject of a serious criminal investigation after a disturbing incident involving his dog and a badger. The incident took place in the vicinity of Dock Road, Connah’s Quay, sometime between September 30 and November 26, 2008. Burt was subsequently convicted in relation to this case, having been prosecuted under the Badgers Act 1992 for his role in the attack.

According to court proceedings, authorities uncovered evidence that linked Burt to the incident through mobile phone footage. This footage, approximately 30 seconds long, was captured on Burt’s phone and depicted his dog, a lurcher/Staffy mix named Hooch, viciously attacking a badger. The footage was described as particularly disturbing, showing the brutal nature of the attack before ending with the badger fleeing the scene.

Law enforcement officials acted swiftly upon receiving credible information about the incident. They obtained a search warrant for Burt’s residence and seized his mobile device. The police then reviewed the footage, which served as crucial evidence in the case. During police interviews, Burt claimed that his dog had sustained injuries during the attack and that he had treated the wounds by washing them with warm, salted water. He also stated that Hooch had been euthanized following the incident.

Following the conviction, North Wales Police Wildlife and Environmental Officer Sgt Rob Taylor expressed his satisfaction with the outcome. He described the act as “callous and sick,” emphasizing the seriousness with which such cruelty is regarded by authorities.

In sentencing, Burt was ordered to complete 150 hours of community service and pay costs amounting to £250. Additionally, he received a three-year ban on keeping animals, a restriction that expired in 2012. The case highlights ongoing efforts by law enforcement and wildlife protection agencies to combat cruelty towards animals and enforce legislation designed to safeguard wildlife and domestic animals alike.
