MAN JAILED FOR 30 MONTHS AFTER PLEADING GUILTY TO ENGAGING IN CONTROLLING AND COERCIVE BEHAVIOUR AND INTIMIDATING A WITNESS
A man from Flintshire who was imprisoned for a pattern of controlling and coercive conduct against his former partner has been released after serving part of his sentence.Callum Ellis, residing on Machynlleth Way in Connah’s Quay, was convicted at Caernarfon Crown Court following his admission to controlling and coercive behaviour, as well as witness intimidation, pertaining to a lengthy period of domestic abuse from February 2024 to February 2025.
The court heard that Ellis repeatedly threatened, assaulted, and harassed his ex-partner during their relationship.
Specific incidents included grabbing her by the throat, submerging her underwater during a bath, throwing drinks at her, damaging property, and sending hundreds of threatening messages and making calls.
Prosecutors stated that Ellis tracked her social media activity, accused her of infidelity multiple times, and tried to dictate her whereabouts and interactions.
On one occasion, he reportedly called her 87 times within two hours before arriving at her home, where property damage was also evident.
The court also heard that she was assaulted while pregnant with Ellis’s child.
Although the charge of causing actual bodily harm was later subsumed into the broader offence of controlling and coercive behaviour due to evidential complications, prosecutors confirmed that this incident was part of the overall abuse pattern.
A victim impact statement revealed that the woman lived in "constant fear, confusion, and self-doubt," and described feeling isolated and traumatised by her experiences.
Ellis received a prison sentence of 30 months, with a concurrent sentence for witness intimidation.
Additionally, a restraining order was issued, barring him from contacting the victim for ten years.
The Crown Prosecution Service noted that several other charges, including assault, strangulation, and criminal damage, were not proceeded with, as guilty pleas were entered on the more serious charges already before the court.
Ellis has since been released from prison.
