LONDON MAN JAILED FOR LIFE FOR KILLING WEALTHY WOMAN TO TAKE HER WEALTH
A man has been handed a life sentence after being found guilty of the murder of Norma Girolami, a wealthy resident of Highgate in north London.Serkan Kaygusuz, who is 42 years old, was convicted of killing the 70-year-old on 19 August 2021.
The court described his conduct as a deliberate, carefully planned, and brutal act driven by greed.
The jury reached its verdict in under half an hour of deliberation.
Although he had earlier admitted to obstructing justice by hiding the victim’s body and stealing her bank cards, he maintained that he was not responsible for her murder.
Court proceedings revealed that Kaygusuz, unemployed and living with his parents in Crouch End, had met Ms Girolami at an Archway swimming pool and eventually formed a relationship with her.
In the course of this relationship, she transferred nearly £300,000 to him, though this stopped in May 2021.
On the day of the killing, Kaygusuz traveled to her flat, murdered her, and later concealed her body in a graveyard.
Judge Philip Katz KC remarked that the crime was “utterly selfish” and driven by greed, adding, “Only you know how Norma Girolami died, and you have chosen not to tell anyone.” He also criticized Kaygusuz’s apparent lack of remorse and pointed out his previous convictions for voyeurism, theft, and assault against a former girlfriend.
The victim’s family described Norma Girolami as a “life-affirming, loving, kind and thoughtful 70-year-old woman,” who was a beloved figure in many lives.
The court highlighted that Kaygusuz had a prior conviction for voyeurism in 2016, along with other offenses.
Authorities noted the trauma inflicted by his actions, and the court condemned the breach of trust involved in the case.
