SEAN SMITH FROM DARTFORD AND DENTON JAILED FOR SEX ABUSE OF YOUNG GIRLS IN MANCHESTER

In a case that has shocked the local communities of Dartford and Denton, a police officer named Sean Smith has been sentenced to prison for the sexual abuse of three young girls during the 1990s. The crimes, which remained hidden for over a decade, only came to light after one of the victims confided in her mother, leading to a thorough investigation and subsequent trial.

Sean Smith, aged 30 at the time of his sentencing, was residing in Denton, Tameside, when the assaults took place. It was revealed during the court proceedings that Smith had joined the military following the commission of these offenses, serving in Oman and Germany before eventually becoming a member of the Metropolitan Police in 2008. Despite his career in law enforcement, his past actions cast a long shadow over his reputation.

At the time of his arrest, Smith was living in Dartford, Kent, with his partner and their young daughter. The court was informed that Smith was considered a troubled young man during his teenage years, which reportedly contributed to his earlier misconduct. The allegations against him first surfaced in 2009, when one of the victims disclosed her experience to her mother. This revelation prompted further investigation, which uncovered that two additional girls had also been sexually abused by Smith.

The youngest of the three victims provided crucial testimony during the trial. She recounted to the court that she initially confided in her father about what had happened. Her father’s reaction was one of anger and distress, as she described: “He went crazy. He was shouting and throwing things about.” She further explained that her father urged her to write down the details of the abuse, which she did, but no immediate action was taken at that time. She also expressed her concern that her father wanted to pursue legal action against Smith but was worried about the pressure and trauma that might entail.

Following the allegations, Smith was arrested in September 2009. Throughout the legal proceedings, he maintained his innocence, claiming that the girls must have been “put up to it.” His defense argued that he was a different person now, emphasizing his positive life changes since the late 1990s. James Doyle, representing Smith, told the court: “You are now to sentence a man aged 30, who is a very different person to that troubled young man back in the late 1990s. There are many good and positive features to his life since the commission of these offences.”

However, the judge overseeing the case, Judge Leslie Hull, was unequivocal in his judgment. He stated that the severity of the crimes warranted a custodial sentence, dismissing the possibility of community punishment. Smith was consequently sentenced to three years in prison at Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court. The court also noted that Smith had been placed on restricted duties at Eltham Police Station following his arrest but had since left the police force altogether, highlighting the serious repercussions of his actions and the breach of trust involved in his case.
