SEAN MCMAHON FROM KENTON SENTENCED IN EXETER FOR CHILD ABUSE OFFENSES IN DEVON AND THAILAND

In a significant case that highlights the serious nature of child abuse and the challenges of international justice, Sean McMahon, a 46-year-old truck driver from Whitcombe Farm in Kenton, Devon, has been sentenced to nine years in prison. The conviction follows his extradition from Thailand, where he had fled after jumping bail in 1999, to face charges related to heinous crimes committed against a young girl in South Devon.

McMahon appeared before Exeter Crown Court yesterday to receive his sentence after admitting to multiple serious charges. These included two counts of attempted rape, three counts of indecent assault, and two counts of indecency with a girl at her residence in South Devon. The court heard that the offences involved a young girl aged nine and ten, representing a gross breach of trust and a grave violation of her innocence.

During the proceedings, Judge Paul Darlow emphasized the severity of McMahon’s crimes, stating, “These offences were a gross breach of trust against a young girl who was aged nine and 10.” The case was brought to light after the victim disclosed what had happened to her, leading to McMahon’s arrest. However, he had previously evaded justice by fleeing the UK and seeking refuge in Thailand.

Prosecutor William Hart explained that McMahon was apprehended by Thai authorities after a lengthy investigation. His extradition back to the United Kingdom was completed in January of the previous year. Despite the extradition, it was only during the recent court proceedings that McMahon admitted to the attempted rape charges, which had been part of the charges against him for some time.

Defense lawyer Simon Laws argued that McMahon’s flight from Devon was driven by fear, claiming that his client had been threatened after the allegations surfaced. Nevertheless, the court did not accept this justification, and McMahon was ordered to sign the sex offenders register for life, marking a lifelong restriction on his freedom and movement.
