Sean Hood, aged 41 and residing at Broad Mead Park in Newport, also controlled her access to her mobile phone.During a court hearing at Cardiff Crown Court, prosecutor Jac Brown explained that Hood and the woman had been involved in a relationship lasting approximately six months.
Initially, their relationship seemed normal, but it soon turned toxic and stressful.
The woman reported that Hood regularly accused her of cheating with male friends, and he would threaten her.
He insisted she delete these friends from Facebook and would restrict her use of her phone.
Hood even threatened to disable her vehicle's brakes and then ridiculed her for believing his threats.
The incident escalated when Hood threw a mobile phone at her, hitting her leg, and forcibly entered her home.
He also damaged property by smashing a vase after throwing keys at it.
In her victim impact statement, she described Hood as unpredictable, expressing that his behavior left her feeling anxious and scared.
She revealed that he made her feel isolated and that she cut ties with friends because of him, leading her to constantly look over her shoulder.
Hood pleaded guilty to charges of controlling and coercive behavior within an intimate relationship, assault causing bodily harm, and criminal damage.
His actions took place between September 1 of the previous year and February 16.
Defence lawyer Kevin Seal highlighted that Hood was a diligent worker who had lost his job after being remanded in custody, resulting in him serving roughly four months in jail.
Judge Recorder Greg Bull KC criticised Hood's conduct as entirely unacceptable and sentenced him to a 12-month community order, requiring 150 hours of unpaid work.
Hood is also mandated to attend 26 sessions of a certified behavioral change program, fined £50 for damaging the vase, and subject to a five-year restraining order preventing any contact with his victim.
Additionally, he must pay a surcharge of £114.
