A man aged 53, Gerry Govier from Neath Abbey Grove in Newport, admitted to a child sex offence after attempting to initiate sexual communication with someone he believed to be a 13-year-old girl.

The matter was heard at Cardiff Crown Court, where Govier pleaded guilty.

The offence involved a decoy and occurred between July 18 and August 11, 2023.

His sentencing was deferred to April 17 to enable a pre-sentence report to be compiled.

Govier was instructed to register as a sex offender and was released on unconditional bail.
