SCOTT THORPE OF DUKINFIELD SENTENCED FOR ONLINE GROOMING AND CHILD PORNOGRAPHY OFFENSES

In July 2018, a disturbing case unfolded involving Scott Thorpe, a resident of Dukinfield, who was ultimately convicted and sentenced for a series of serious sexual offences related to online grooming and possession of indecent images of children.

The case came to light after vigilant paedophile hunters successfully identified and captured Thorpe in the act of attempting to engage with what he believed was a young girl through online communications.

Thorpe appeared before the court to face the charges, which included multiple counts of grooming and possessing indecent images.

The evidence presented revealed that Thorpe had initiated contact with a profile he thought belonged to a minor girl.

Over the course of their online interactions, he sent numerous sexually explicit messages, demonstrating a clear intent to exploit a child.

However, the profile was not genuine; it was operated by the 'Dark Light' online child protection team, who had set up the account to catch offenders.

They provided their evidence to the police, leading to Thorpe’s arrest.

Following his arrest, authorities uncovered additional troubling evidence.

A thorough analysis of Thorpe’s mobile phone revealed that he had downloaded more images of children, further confirming his involvement in the possession of indecent material.

It was also established that Thorpe had previously been convicted for possessing indecent images of children, which made his actions a breach of his existing sex offender prevention order.

This breach was considered a serious aggravating factor in his case.

Thorpe faced multiple charges, which resulted in a series of sentences.

He was sentenced to two years imprisonment for the first count, with additional sentences of 14 months, 16 months, 16 months, 32 months, 32 months, and 16 weeks for the subsequent counts.

Due to the sentences being served concurrently, the total time Thorpe was to spend in custody was two years and eight months.

The court also imposed an indefinite sexual harm prevention order, requiring Thorpe to register as a sex offender for life, reflecting the severity of his crimes and the ongoing risk he poses to the community.
