He also downloaded manuals instructing how to attract children and hide them from authorities, including guides titled ‘How to get and hide a child’ and ‘How to befriend and molest children.’ Further evidence included videos of O’Connell engaging in sexual acts with a 17-year-old boy, with whom he also kept sexual paraphernalia.
Police also discovered messages between O’Connell and another man, which included a video of him sexually abusing a dog, with references to future sex with animals.
O’Connell faced multiple charges, including making indecent images of children, possessing extreme pornography and bestiality, and possessing paedophile manuals.
The court was told O’Connell was an 'intelligent young man' with computer skills but had a troubled background and serious mental health issues.
He had been straightforward with police and assisted with device access.
He expressed self-hatred for his actions.
Judge Timothy Clayson described the case as very serious, citing the extensive collection of indecent images and paedophile manuals.
