NEWARK EX-SERVICEMAN HEADED TO COURT FOR ASSAULT AND SMASHING PHONE
An ex-serviceman who used a woman as a "punch bag" has been ordered to pay her compensation.The woman was attacked in Newark and felt her "nose crack" as she was headbutted by ex-partner Sam Glasby, 33, of Gilbert Avenue, Tuxford, Newark, who had previously served in Afghanistan.
Glasby pleaded guilty to assault and smashing her phone - and was handed a 15-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, on Thursday (September 21).
He left Nottingham Crown Court with a two-year community order, a requirement to go on an accredited programme, ten rehabilitation activity days, and to pay £1,000 for a new phone.
Glasby, now a welding fabricator, which he describes as the "best job he has had since he was in the army", was banned from contacting the victim for five years.
Judge Stuart Rafferty KC said there was a time when courts wearied with dealing with drug dealers - but now it wearies with men who think it is perfectly appropriate to use women as punch bags, "just like you did".
After making himself a "time bomb waiting to go off with drink and drugs", said the judge, the woman was provoked by Glasby to the point she felt she needed to slap him.
But he reacted with a headbutt, leaving her with a deviated septum.
In a tantrum, he threw her phone to the floor, damaging it beyond repair.
Yet again, the judge said, the court was dealing with someone long after the event.
The principle offence was on April 24 last year - and Glasby was not charged until January 20 this year.
"Yet again your case has languished on some dusty shelf without being dealt with properly," said the judge.
"There have been further delays, which were not your fault, due to the backlog of cases, which shows no sign of diminishing and will only increase.
None of that diminishes what you did.
"I consider your case now and the person you have become.
It is a relief you have finally begun to seek help".
