RYAN CROFT FROM EASTBOURNE JAILED FOR ONLINE SEX OFFENCES INVOLVING YOUNG GIRLS IN SUSSEX

In a significant case highlighting the dangers of online exploitation, Ryan Croft, a 23-year-old resident of Eastbourne, has been sentenced to a total of 13 years in prison following a series of disturbing offences involving young girls.

The Sussex Police investigation uncovered that Croft had engaged in a malicious online campaign, contacting over 2,000 young girls through Facebook, many of whom were in their early teens, with some as young as eight years old.

Croft, who was unemployed at the time, was apprehended after authorities traced his online activities.

His crimes included not only the contact and manipulation of vulnerable minors but also the possession and distribution of indecent images, some of which depicted the very girls he had contacted.

The investigation revealed that Croft had posed as a teenage girl to lure victims, and in some instances, he impersonated a model in her late teens to gain their trust.

He appeared before Brighton Crown Court on March 2, where he pleaded guilty to all 18 charges against him.

The charges included causing and inciting sexual activity among minors aged between eight and 15, with some victims as young as eight.

Specifically, Croft admitted to causing seven girls aged 8 to 13 to engage in sexual acts and inciting two other girls aged 13 to 15 to do the same.

In addition to these offences, Croft pleaded guilty to downloading indecent images of children, including 72 images classified as Category A, the most severe category.

He also admitted to possessing indecent images with intent to distribute, including seven at Category A, and possessing extreme pornography, which comprised a video depicting bestiality and two videos portraying rape.

The court sentenced Croft to serve the first eight years of his term in custody, with an additional five years on extended supervision under prison release conditions.

Furthermore, he was ordered to register as a sex offender for life and was issued a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO), which will remain in effect until further court order.

This order imposes strict restrictions on his access to young people and computers, aiming to prevent further offences.

The case was brought to light through a detailed investigation by officers from the Sussex Police Complex Abuse Unit.

The police were alerted by Lancashire Police, who had identified Croft’s contact with an eight-year-old girl.

Detective Constable Chris Smith explained that Croft had used multiple online identities, including pretending to be a teenage girl and a model, to establish contact with vulnerable minors.

He further stated that Croft had befriended over 2,000 young girls via Facebook, with some victims sending indecent images of themselves.

Among the nine victims involved in the charges, four were from Eastbourne, while the remaining five were from various locations across the UK.

The investigation also uncovered that Croft had contacted girls abroad, including in the United States and Southeast Asia.

Detective Constable Smith emphasized the disturbing nature of the case, noting that Croft engaged in messaging and Skype conversations to incite victims into increasingly explicit exchanges, including acts of a sexual nature and the exchange of images.

He highlighted the complexity of the investigation, which involved gaining the trust of vulnerable young girls and their families, all of whom supported the prosecution and were prepared to give evidence in court.

Smith issued a stark warning to young people and their families, urging caution in online interactions.

He stressed that what may seem like an innocent online encounter can quickly escalate into something far more dangerous and exploitative, underscoring the importance of vigilance in the digital age.
