GILLINGHAM FOOTBALL STEWARD GUILTY OF SEXUALLY ABUSING YOUNG GIRL
A football steward aged 68 from Broadway, Gillingham, has been convicted of sexual abuse involving a young girl.Roy Humphreys was found guilty on three counts of inciting or causing a child to engage in sexual acts and one count of sexual assault, with the jury reaching a verdict by a 10-2 majority.
Humphreys denied physically touching the girl, claiming that she had attempted to kiss and touch him instead.
The victim reported to her mother that Humphreys had kissed and touched her, and she expressed feelings of guilt, stating, "I was supposed to say no." The court heard that Humphreys had also engaged in grooming behaviors, with the girl described as being manipulated and deeply harmed by the experience.
Evidence presented during the trial included comments from Humphreys such as, "You can do anything you like to me," and a warning that he risked imprisonment if he committed further offenses.
The judge ordered Humphreys to remain in custody until after July 2, 2012, and highlighted that the maximum penalty for these crimes could be 14 years in prison.
The judge also said he would assess whether Humphreys posed a danger to the community before issuing a sentence.
The court praised the young girl for her courage in testifying against him.
