FOLKESTONE MAN ROHAN RAI SENTENCED FOR UPSKIRT VIDEOS AND CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN KENT
In November 2018, a man from Folkestone named Roshan Rai was handed a significant prison sentence after being found guilty of a series of disturbing sexual offences involving minors. The case drew considerable attention due to the nature of the crimes and the location involved, highlighting the ongoing concerns about child safety and online exploitation in the region.
Rai, a resident of Firs Lane in Folkestone, was convicted of multiple serious offences, including the covert filming of children in a manner that infringed upon their privacy and dignity.
His criminal activities came to light following an investigation that uncovered a disturbing pattern of behavior, which included the production and distribution of indecent images and videos involving young children.
The initial alert that triggered the investigation was received in February 2017.
Authorities were informed that an 11-year-old girl was being coerced into sending nude images of herself online.
The individual behind this manipulation claimed to be a 14-year-old boy from London, but subsequent inquiries revealed the true identity of the perpetrator as Roshan Rai, aged 27, living in Folkestone.
This revelation prompted a thorough investigation by the Kent Police and specialized units focused on online child exploitation.
During a search of Rai’s residence, law enforcement officers from the Paedophile Online Investigation Team seized a computer.
A forensic analysis of the device uncovered thousands of indecent images and videos, many of which were classified as the most severe category of child exploitation material.
Further examination of Rai’s mobile phone revealed additional disturbing content, including screenshots from social media platforms showing children with whom he had made contact.
In addition to digital evidence, authorities recovered a storage device from Rai’s bedroom.
This device contained numerous videos, including those taken covertly inside a communal changing area at a swimming pool.
These videos depicted children as young as three years old, captured while changing into their swimming costumes, raising grave concerns about the safety and privacy of minors in public spaces.
Rai pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including causing or inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity, encouraging a child to watch a sexual act, outraging public decency through the filming of children in upskirt videos, and voyeurism.
He also admitted to creating and possessing indecent images of children on three separate counts.
On November 9, 2018, the court sentenced Roshan Rai to a term of four years and two months in prison, reflecting the severity of his crimes and the impact on the victims involved.
The case underscores the importance of vigilance and proactive law enforcement efforts in combating child exploitation and safeguarding vulnerable minors in the Folkestone area and beyond.
