——————————————————————————— A paedophile downloaded indecent photos of young boys just days after being released from prison for contacting children while banned from doing so.
Ben Champion, who has previously been branded a “risk to the public”, was found to have searched for the images only a week after being freed on licence.
The pictures were discovered on his mobile phone during an unannounced visit to his home, landing the 32-year-old back behind bars to serve the rest of his sentence.
It was the latest in a series of flagrant breaches of Sexual Harm Prevention Orders (SHPOs) – court orders designed to restrict the activities of sex offenders and protect the public from further harm.
Champion, previously of Chatham but now of Folkestone, was made subject to an SHPO in 2017 for sexual offences not disclosed at his most recent hearing.
In 2020, he was found to have breached the conditions of that order multiple times, including by lying about having a mobile phone with internet access – with 18 indecent images found on the device.
He also failed to declare several changes of address and a new bank account.
Branding him a “risk to the public”, a judge jailed him for three years and four months.
But prison proved little deterrent.
In 2024, Champion was again back in court for multiple breaches of his SHPO after police discovered he had been in contact with children, deleted browsing history on his phone and was living at a different address to the one given to officers.
He was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison and released on licence on September 1.
Just a week later, during an unannounced visit on September 8, police found he had been searching online for “teen boys”.
Three indecent images were discovered on his phone, and he was hauled back to court two days later, where he admitted one count of making indecent photographs of a child.
As he had breached his licence conditions, he was immediately recalled to prison to serve the remainder of his sentence.
Sentencing for the new offence was adjourned until October 21 at Margate Magistrates’ Court so probation could prepare reports.
Champion, of Marine Parade Mews, appeared there via video link from prison.
Prosecutor Terry Knox told the court Champion had been found with three category C images – a lower severity than the most graphic kind – on his phone on September 8.
He also had been searching for “cute boys” and “teen boys”, with a gallery of images showing boys with nudity tags, some appearing to be about five years old.
The defending lawyer said Champion had pleaded guilty at the first opportunity and had been remanded since September 10, with 14 months left to serve on his previous sentence he was recalled to complete.
He also noted Champion had been abused as a child, which contributed to his issues.
Magistrates sentenced him to 120 days, to run concurrently with his existing sentence, and ordered he remain on the sex offenders register for the next seven years and his phone be destroyed.
———————————————————————————— Previous article - Ben Champion, a resident of Kent, has been sentenced to prison after violating the terms of his sexual harm prevention order (SHPO).
Champion, who resides in Old Road, Chatham, was previously convicted at Maidstone Crown Court in 2020 for the offense of producing indecent images of children.
As part of his conviction, the court imposed a strict and indefinite set of conditions designed to restrict his interactions and monitor his behavior to prevent any further harm.
These conditions included a ban on any unsupervised contact with minors, a requirement to inform the police if he changed his residence for more than seven days, and a mandate to retain his internet browsing history for inspection by law enforcement officers.
These measures aimed to closely supervise Champion’s activities and prevent any potential reoffending.
However, on April 18, 2024, authorities from Kent conducted a routine check at Champion’s registered address.
During this visit, they discovered that he had been living at a different property, which was a clear breach of the court order.
Further investigations revealed that Champion had been in contact with children during this period, despite the restrictions placed upon him.
Additionally, officers found that he had deliberately deleted some of his internet history from his phone, an act that raised suspicion of attempts to conceal his online activities.
These breaches prompted his arrest and subsequent charging with multiple violations of his sexual harm prevention order, spanning from March to April of 2024.
Champion was brought before Maidstone Crown Court, where he pleaded guilty to the charges.
On Tuesday, September 17, 2024, the court sentenced the 31-year-old to a prison term of two years and eight months.
His incarceration reflects the seriousness with which the judicial system treats breaches of court orders designed to protect vulnerable individuals from harm.
