PERTH MAN RORY MOWATT JAILED FOR BRUTAL ASSAULTS ON ELDERLY MOTHER
Rory Mowatt, aged 44, committed severe acts of violence against his elderly mother in her flat in Letham, Perth. He violently assaulted her on two separate days.
The first incident involved kicking her in the face while wearing work boots, striking her on the head with a wooden clothes hanger which caused profuse bleeding, and smashing the television and switching off the power.
Despite discussing the incident with her afterward, he returned two days later, where he again caused chaos by playing loud music, punching, kicking, and repeatedly hitting her with a plant pot and a mug, leading to a fractured jaw and extensive bruising.
The victim initially chose not to report due to fear, but injuries surfaced when her daughter later took her to hospital.
Police later searched Mowatt's home, finding blood-spattered items and blood-stained boots.
Mowatt was also previously on bail for wielding a knife at Perth Royal Infirmary and threatened to stab staff.
He suffers from schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, attending a mental health center for medication.
Mowatt admitted to carrying a knife and attacking his mother in court.
The sheriff sentenced him to 38 months in jail—27 months for the assaults—and ordered a 12-month supervised release, noting his violence was unwarranted given his mental health issues, which were worsened by substance misuse.
The sheriff emphasized that there was no psychiatric defense for his crimes and condemned his brutal abuse of his mother in her home, which caused her significant fear and injury.
