ROBERT WILLIAMS FROM WREXHAM SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT AND CHILD PORNOGRAPHY
In May 2022, a disturbing case involving Robert Williams, a resident of Wrexham, culminated in his being sentenced to a lengthy prison term for heinous crimes involving a young boy and the possession and distribution of indecent images of children. The proceedings took place at Caernarfon Crown Court, where it was revealed that Williams, aged 37 and an inmate at HMP Berwyn, had committed a series of grave offenses spanning over a year.
Between 2003 and 2004, Williams targeted a vulnerable young boy in Wrexham, isolating him and subjecting him to sexual assault on two separate occasions.
The court heard that Williams also took photographs of a baby and shared these indecent images online, further demonstrating the depravity of his actions.
During the sentencing hearing, Williams sat with his head bowed, showing signs of remorse or perhaps resignation.
Prosecutor Paulinus Barnes detailed the extent of Williams' criminal activities, emphasizing that the police had uncovered a vast collection of indecent images stored on his devices.
The investigation was triggered in January 2020 when authorities in North Wales responded to an online conversation involving a person with a sexual interest in children.
A search warrant was executed at the address linked to the user, later confirmed to be Williams, leading to the seizure of multiple electronic devices.
Authorities discovered over 75,000 indecent images, a staggering number that overwhelmed categorization efforts.
Of these, more than 1,000 images were classified, with 356 falling into the most severe Category A, 182 in Category B, and 612 in Category C.
Additionally, 21 prohibited images of children and one extreme pornography video were found.
The children depicted ranged from newborns to approximately 13 years old, and the search terms used by Williams on his devices included disturbing phrases such as “baby boys,” “rape,” and “child torture.” Further complicating the case, Williams was also charged with producing indecent images.
Evidence showed that he had secretly photographed a baby and subsequently distributed some of these images online, which the judge described as an act of significant depravity.
The court heard that Williams had gained access to a home, taken the photographs covertly, and then circulated them among other paedophiles in online communities.
Judge Nicola Saffman addressed the court, condemning the content of some images as “amongst the most depraved,” and highlighting the severe psychological impact on the victim of the sexual assault.
The victim’s impact statement revealed that the assault had profoundly affected his life, leading to issues with his education, substance abuse, repeated incarceration, and ongoing flashbacks and nightmares.
The court was told that he suffers from “unbearable depression” whenever he recalls the traumatic events.
In her sentencing remarks, Judge Saffman emphasized that the criminality and depravity of Williams’ actions far exceeded the guidelines typically applied to such offenses.
She described him as a significant risk to the community, especially to children, and decided to impose an extended sentence.
Williams was sentenced to ten years in prison for all the offenses combined, with an additional five years on license.
He will also be subject to a lifelong sexual harm prevention order and notification requirements.
All devices seized from him are to be destroyed, and he will remain under strict supervision to prevent any further harm.
This case underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat child exploitation and the serious consequences faced by those who commit such heinous acts in Wrexham and beyond.
