NEWPORT VOYEUR ROBERT SANDALLS FACES PRISON AFTER SEXUAL ASSAULT AND FILMING TEENAGE GIRL
In a case that has shocked the Newport community, Robert Sandalls, a 65-year-old man from Chepstow Road, Newport, was brought before Cardiff Crown Court to face serious allegations involving the sexual exploitation and voyeurism of a teenage girl.The incident, which took place over a span of months, has raised significant concerns about the safety and vulnerability of young individuals in the area.
Initially scheduled for trial on multiple charges, Sandalls was charged with two counts of voyeurism, one count of sexual assault, and the making of indecent photographs.
However, before the jury was sworn in, the defendant entered guilty pleas to two of the charges—specifically, one count of voyeurism committed in February 2017 and a single count of sexual assault that occurred between April and May of the previous year.
The court accepted his pleas, and the remaining charges were dropped on the grounds that pursuing a trial on those counts would not serve the public interest.
During the proceedings, Judge Jeremy Jenkins expressed concern about the nature of Sandalls' offending, highlighting the “grooming aspect” as a particularly troubling factor.
The judge emphasized that such behavior, especially involving a minor, is a serious matter that warrants careful consideration.
Representing Sandalls, Nicholas Gedge noted that his client was in poor health and had a lengthy criminal history.
The most recent conviction prior to this case was a three-month prison sentence handed down in 2015 for perverting the course of justice.
Given Sandalls’ age and health issues, the judge ordered a pre-sentence report to be prepared.
The Probation Service was also asked to assess whether Sandalls might benefit from participation in a suitable rehabilitation program.
Sandalls was granted conditional bail, and the sentencing was adjourned to Monday, April 16, at Cardiff Crown Court.
The case continues to draw attention to the importance of safeguarding vulnerable individuals and the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to address such disturbing crimes in Newport and beyond.
