GLASGOW MAN JAILED FOR 30 MONTHS AFTER HORRIFIC 13-HOUR ATTACK ON PARTNER
A convicted attempted murderer named Robert Rankine, aged 33, who previously served an 11-year sentence for attempted murder in Edinburgh in 2006, has been jailed for 30 months after a violent attack on his partner in Glasgow's Baillieston between September 11 and 12, 2020.During the assault, Rankine repeatedly choked the woman with both hands, slapped her causing her to blackout, and forcibly restrained her.
He also said during the attack, "the only worry is getting out the house alive." The victim described her ordeal as horrific, noting that her body was lifeless at one point, and she blacked out multiple times.
She managed to escape the next morning after being assaulted, during which she sustained bruising all over her body and swelling to her face and eyes, and she was understandably nervous and had to take time off work.
Rankine was convicted of assaulting the woman after a jury trial at Glasgow Sheriff Court and faced a five-year non-harassment order.
He had lodged a plea of self-defense prior to the trial.
The attack began after the woman was messaging a male friend, and Rankine's temper erupted when he grabbed her phone and pushed her to the ground, then got on top of her, strangling her.
The woman managed to call emergency services but only managed a mistaken 112 call before Rankine snatched her phone back and falsely told the call handler everything was okay.
The woman described her ordeal as involving choking with both hands, singling out that at one point he put his thumbs on her throat, causing horrific pain.
She also recalled waking up the next morning beside Rankine, who threatened her not to leave, but she managed to escape by running into her car and driving to her mother's house, where a 999 call was made.
Rankine was later arrested at her home.
The woman’s injuries were severe, and the physical and psychological effects of the assault continue to impact her.
The court sentenced Rankine to 30 months in prison and granted a five-year non-harassment order to protect the victim.
