COVENTRY MAN JAILED FOR HUMAN TRAFFICKING AND RAPE

A Coventry man named Robert Petre has received a 17-year prison sentence after being convicted of multiple grave offenses, including human trafficking and sex-related crimes. The 33-year-old was found guilty of orchestrating or assisting in the travel of a victim for exploitation, running a prostitution business for profit, and committing two counts of rape along with assault. His trial was conducted at Warwick Crown Court last month, and he was sentenced on January 22, with an additional three years added to his licence period. It was also recommended that he face deportation after serving his sentence. The case detailed how Petre met the victim in Romania in 2017. Shortly after, he forced her to come to England to work as a prostitute, threatening her children’s lives if she did not comply. He physically abused and sexually assaulted her, took all her earnings, and made her work in Coventry under duress. The victim escaped in April 2017, seeking help from the police. Petre’s arrest followed in July 2018, after he was extradited from Romania through a European Arrest Warrant. The investigation shed light on the brutal conditions common in modern slavery, such as physical abuse, frequent captivity, poor housing, restricted movement, unusual travel hours, and reluctance to seek help. After his sentencing, Warwickshire Police released a statement, with Det Con Kate Williams expressing her hope that this case demonstrates police commitment to fighting human trafficking. She commended the victim for her courage and emphasized that her testimony was instrumental in revealing the severity of such crimes. The article concludes with contact details for organizations that provide assistance to victims of trafficking and slavery.
