INVERNESS CHILD RAPIST ROBERT MCGREGOR FACES LIFE BEHIND BARS

Inverness has been shaken by the disturbing case of Robert McGregor, a convicted child sex offender whose heinous crimes have left a lasting scar on the community.

The mother of one of McGregor’s victims has issued a heartfelt plea to prevent his early release from prison, describing her ordeal as a 'living hell' and urging others to come forward with information that could help keep him incarcerated.

McGregor, aged 39, is a former delivery driver from Inverness who was sentenced to ten years in prison at the High Court in Edinburgh in April 2017 after admitting to a series of grave sexual offenses against children.

His crimes spanned over a decade, from 2001 to 2014, involving the sexual abuse of young boys, some as young as three years old.

The abuse was documented through videos and photographs that McGregor himself recorded, which he then shared with other online predators.

The extent of his depravity was revealed when police uncovered a vast collection of over 2,000 indecent images and 899 videos, many depicting the most extreme forms of abuse.

His youngest victim was a three-year-old boy, and the abuse continued with other children aged six and twelve.

McGregor’s manipulative tactics included forming relationships with families, gaining their trust, and then exploiting that trust to commit his crimes.

Court evidence showed that he had used his charm and seemingly normal demeanor to lure children into dangerous situations, often taking them on outings such as fishing, camping, and trips to the cinema, all while secretly abusing them.

The case was further compounded by the discovery of videos in which McGregor raped and sexually assaulted his victims, some of whom were visibly distressed and unable to speak.

Police investigations traced the victims through the images and videos, leading to the identification of three children who had been abused.

One of the victims, a boy from Inverness, provided a detailed five-hour statement to police, describing the abuse he endured over two years.

His testimony was instrumental in building the case against McGregor.

In court, Lady Carmichael described McGregor’s offenses as “of the most serious and appalling nature,” emphasizing that he had used relationships with families to access children and carry out his predatory acts.

The judge ordered that McGregor be kept under supervision for a further five years upon his release, reflecting the severity of his crimes and the ongoing risk he poses to the community.

The mother of one of McGregor’s victims has been vocal in her opposition to his potential early release.

She has highlighted the emotional toll on her family and expressed her belief that more victims may still be out there, hidden in the vast collection of images and videos found on McGregor’s devices.

She has also initiated a petition, which has garnered nearly 1,400 signatures, demanding that McGregor not be granted parole.

She urges anyone who suspects they may have been targeted or who has information about his other victims to come forward, emphasizing the importance of community action in preventing further harm.

McGregor’s crimes came to light after police raided his home in Inverness in May of the previous year.

The investigation was prompted by intelligence from the National Online Child Abuse Prevention Agency, which revealed that McGregor had been downloading and sharing child sexual abuse images.

The police seized multiple devices, including laptops, which contained the extensive collection of illegal material.

The investigation uncovered that McGregor had uploaded videos to peer-to-peer networks, allowing viewers from countries such as the United States, Germany, and the Czech Republic to access his abuse footage.

The court proceedings revealed that McGregor’s offending was not only extensive but also deeply disturbing.

His actions caused profound trauma to his victims and their families, with some victims feeling unable to speak out due to fear or shame.

The judge noted that McGregor’s behavior was “of the most serious and appalling nature,” and he was remanded in custody pending a risk assessment that could lead to a lifelong restriction order, effectively a life sentence.

Community members and victims’ families continue to advocate for justice, emphasizing the importance of community vigilance and the need for victims to come forward.

The police and judicial authorities have stated that they will not comment on individual cases, but the case of Robert McGregor remains a stark reminder of the dangers posed by such predators and the importance of ongoing efforts to protect children from exploitation and abuse.
