DOMESTIC ABUSER ESCAPES JAIL AFTER VIOLENT ATTACK AND THREATS
A man identified as Robbie Burton, aged 26, was involved in a serious incident of domestic abuse that took place in a motorhome. He forcibly assaulted his ex-partner after abruptly slamming on the brakes while she was seated in the back of the vehicle.
During the assault, Burton restrained her with a headlock, leaving her with a significant number of injuries.
The court heard that this occurred on May 23 of the previous year, during which, after the brakes were slammed, the woman fell and was injured when she hit a plastic bowl that broke and caused cuts to her leg.
Burton then physically assaulted her by pushing her to the floor, sitting next to her, placing an arm around her neck, and applying a headlock from behind.
Following this, Burton parked the vehicle in Carrbridge overnight, and the situation escalated when he became agitated, cut himself requiring 17 stitches, and made threatening and abusive remarks towards his ex-partner.
He called her a “fat cow”, mocked her accent, threatened to kill her father, and even threatened to set the vehicle on fire, which would also have put her car at risk.
Burton also threatened to kill himself during the incident, stating, “I’m dead today.” The victim submitted a statement to the court describing how he has essentially ruin her life.
While admitting to assault and threatening behavior, Burton has avoided jail and has been placed on a community payback order to complete 300 hours of unpaid work.
Additionally, he has been issued a three-year non-harassment order banning him from contacting the woman.
The sheriff emphasized that the offences were appalling, and although Burton is addressing his own trauma, his actions cannot be justified.
The incident has been recognized as domestic abuse, and he has previous related offenses, including participation in a domestic offending program.
