MAN SENTENCED TO HOSPITAL ORDER FOR WIFE'S MURDER IN WILTSHIRE
A man who caused a police search after killing his wife has been sentenced to a hospital order.
Richard Newton murdered Suzanne Bavette Newton, aged 45, at their residence in Barnes Wallis Close, Bowerhill, Melksham, Wiltshire on January 13 of the previous year.
Newton admitted manslaughter on grounds of diminished responsibility and was sentenced at Bristol Crown Court.
Newton's family expressed their ongoing grief, stating, "after 13 months of waiting, we as a family can continue mourning the shocking death of our amazing daughter and mother, Sue." According to Wiltshire Police, Newton injured his wife fatally inside their home before driving to Exmoor, where he confessed his actions to his brother.
Det Ch Insp Ian Saunders added that Newton spent hours on Exmoor, prompting a thorough police search of the remote area.
Newton was then handed a hospital order, meaning he will be held in a secure mental health facility until deemed fit for release, with a restriction order to monitor him even if he is released.
Relatives of Ms Newton highlighted her qualities and expressed sorrow over the events, emphasizing the profound impact on two families affected forever.
