MAN JAILED FOR LIFE OVER LLANELLI MURDER AFTER DELUSIONAL BELIEFS
Richard Jones has been handed a life sentence after being convicted of the murder of Sophie Evans, the partner of his son.Her body was found face down and unclothed on the kitchen floor of a property in Llanelli following a fatal attack and strangulation on 5 July 2024.
In January 2025, Swansea Crown Court found Jones guilty of her murder and imposed a minimum prison term of 20 years.
Court evidence showed that Jones mistakenly believed Sophie Evans had fraudulently taken deeds related to his mother's home.
He visited her residence shortly after she had taken her children to school, where he murdered her before departing.
During the trial, Jones pleaded guilty to manslaughter with diminished responsibility, but denied intent to kill, asserting he thought he was being financially exploited and was under a delusional impression that he had transferred property rights.
Psychiatric evaluations concluded that he was '100% certain' of these false perceptions, which arose from a delusional disorder.
The jury dismissed these defenses, hearing expert psychiatric testimony, and held Jones fully accountable for his actions.
Senior prosecutor Abul Hussain stated, 'The evidence showed Richard Jones was entirely responsible for his callous conduct.' The court was told that Jones had referred to Sophie Evans and his son as 'scamming thieves' in conversations with his ex-partner, claiming he had 'dealt with the problem.' A victim impact statement read in court detailed how her family and two daughters continue to grieve her loss.
Her sister described her as 'the rock of our family and the best mum,' condemning her death as a 'brutal, senseless act.' The victim’s partner also voiced the view that 'what Richard did is truly unforgivable.' The judge described the attack as 'frenzied,' highlighting that despite the violence inflicted, Jones calmly left the scene and attended to personal matters, ignoring that Sophie Evans's life was in peril during the assault.
